brand journalism

The intersection of editorial and marketing is where storytelling connects individuals to something greater, whether that’s a product, organization, small business, creative collaboration, advocacy group, or other source of shared value and community. Here is a small selection of pieces I am most proud of, with gratitude to the people who trusted me to usher a glimpse of their lives onto the page.

On a Monday morning of mishaps in mid-January 2024, my boss of three years and long-time editor of Wheaton, the historical print publication of Wheaton College (IL), told me he was being promoted to a different department at the institution, effective immediately. I laughed in his face, pixelated and blurry on my laptop that kept losing internet connection. I thought he was kidding. Five minutes later, his facial features had yet to arrange as a smile, a smirk, even a twitch. In a blink, panic. We had only just presented our outline for the 80-page summer issue to the Editorial Board. Over 30 contractors, in-house collaborators, and upper-rung stakeholders across editorial, visual, administrative, advancement, social, and more awaited management. Someone needed to call the shots, and soon.

“Well. The show must go on,” fell out of my mouth like a prayer.

I cried. Squared my shoulders. Advocated. Bought new pants. Cried some more. Led meetings with important people I was shocked to discover respected me and trusted my editorial judgments. Sat in parking lots haunted by how a young minority woman (me?) was helming a hundred-year-old collegiate heritage. Went to press in May. Used a forest green pocket knife to open a cardboard box containing advanced copies of my first-born child. Held Summer 2024 in my hands and (surprise) cried.

Chaos doesn’t even come close to capturing the year. I’ve never been more challenged to increase in competence, confidence, and courage. But the Lord multiplies our fishes and loaves. Miracle of miracles, we did the dang thing.

Trailblazer. Advocate. Friend.

“I thought I was going to heaven on earth . . .

It was not that.”

An Engineer of Excellence

The transition to teaching in the graduate school of his alma mater had its hurdles. “It was a divine coincidence that I came back here,” Moreau said. He was hired with only a one-year contract. After the dependability of Cru, the uncertainty necessitated a leap of faith. Yet for all his hesitations, he trusted God had work for him to accomplish and people to serve at Wheaton. Together with his wife and children, Moreau made the move to Illinois. He stayed for 32 years.
